I strive to minimise the carbon footprint of the websites and apps that I develop, and enhance their environmental responsibility.
Sustainable web development
My aim is to build these sites with sustainability in mind, and this is done by writing clean code to ensure fast and smooth-running pages. I also aim to keep things simple by not including too many third-party videos and social media embeds, utilizing privacy-friendly analytics tools that don't use cookies if and when needed, and not including unnecessary animations.
I also make sure to optimize my images so that they consume as little data as possible depending on the device the user has. Each website I create is also user-friendly, fast, and resource-friendly. I also attempt to go through my website regularly to ensure that I eliminate things that are no longer needed in my website and update the things that are.
Eco-responsible hosting
My site is hosted at the German hosting provider Hetzner, whose servers are driven by hydropower, you can read more about their focus on sustainability on their "Sustainability" page.
Long-term goals advancing sustainable web development
One of my long term goals to advance the sustainable web development work on this site is automating asset loading based on the electricty load, mix and price for each of this site's visitors, in what I call "Eco Mode". This is still a work in progress and in an early development stage whilst waiting for a good and affordable enough API to use for this data.
